We Entered a Time Vortex to Watch 'The Mummy Returns'
It should come as no surprise that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz still have insane chemistry in the sequel.
We know our podcast has a whole schtick. We watch and talk about ‘90s movies, we get that.
But if you’ve listened to us at all, you know that one movie has consistently risen above the rest in terms of warranting our attention and unrelenting praise. That film, of course, is 1999’s The Mummy.
So when we were presented with the opportunity to enter a time portal to watch something from the 21st century, we jumped at the chance, naturally selecting The Mummy Returns, the 2001 sequel that once again features Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz having the most palpable on-screen chemistry of all time.
Oh yeah, and there’s the requisite ramped-up mummy action here, with the added disregard for anything resembling much of a coherent plot. This film has gotten to be known for its rough CGI sequences (primarily the finale and the Rock’s scorpion creature), but it’s hard to hate getting to hang out with these characters again in a film full of fun set pieces. Most of the world seemed to agree, as this went on to make $435 million, warranting a far more misguided third movie.
So let’s revisit a film that was faced with the tall task of following one of the greatest adventure movies of all time, but is still pretty darn fun in its own right. Check out our latest episode on The Mummy Returns on Apple, Spotify, and anywhere else you get your podcasts.
